Out of 23 applicants vying for the post of public health director, only a single candidate appears to meet all criteria established by the Board of Health, according to board Chairman Patricia Anne Talbot.
Talbot stated that the individual possesses certification as a registered sanitarian and certified health officer, backed by five years of direct experience in public health fields and municipal health departments. While noting that several other candidates presented strong educational credentials, Talbot emphasized that no one else matched the specific combination of experience and qualifications required.
The candidate’s identity remains confidential at their request while the board finalizes its screening process, and no formal job offer has been extended or accepted. Talbot indicated that the board expects to announce a successor within two weeks to replace Bartley J. King, the town’s longtime health director who abruptly resigned a month prior amidst a dispute over inspection deadlines.
To ensure greater operational flexibility, the board plans to eliminate the position’s Civil Service status. The incoming director will initially serve on a “temporary full-time” basis until upcoming town meeting sessions authorize petitioning the Legislature for a permanent reclassification. Talbot explained that removing Civil Service protections will prevent the new director from becoming rigid or locked into overly narrow duties.
