A legislative proposal aiming to increase local governmental accessibility in Norwood has moved one step closer to reality.
On July 08, 1966, it was reported that a bill seeking to establish a branch office of the Registry of Motor Vehicles (RMV) in Norwood had successfully cleared the Committee on Highways and Motor Vehicles. The legislation, officially filed as House Bill No. 2274, has now been advanced to the House Committee on Ways and Means for further review. The bill was sponsored by State Representative David C. Ahearn (D-Norwood), who has been a vocal advocate for bringing state services closer to the residents of the region.
Representative Ahearn has argued that Norwood is a natural and logical selection for a regional branch office, citing the town’s role as a significant commercial, shopping, and automotive hub for the neighboring communities. According to the data supporting the bill, the proposed service area for the new office encompasses more than 165,000 residents. Ahearn noted that projections for the facility suggest that the volume of driver examinations and total automobile registrations would likely surpass the activity levels currently handled by several other existing branch offices across the Commonwealth.
To further bolster his argument for the location, Representative Ahearn pointed to the existing concentration of state and federal administrative bodies already operating within the town, such as the Social Security and Employment Security offices. These institutions, he suggested, prove that Norwood is already equipped to handle the logistical demands of a high-traffic government service point.
Regarding the next steps in the legislative process, Ahearn acknowledged that the decision now rests with the House Committee on Ways and Means. “The question for Ways and Means to decide is whether the public convenience and necessity dictates such an office at this time,” he explained. Expressing confidence in the proposal’s merit, he added, “I am so convinced and have tried to so inform the committee members.” Should the bill pass this committee and receive final legislative approval, it would represent a significant expansion of state administrative presence within the town, providing local motorists with a more convenient option for vehicle-related business.
