Army Sgt. Lawrence H. Mitchell, 21, husband of Mrs. Marietta A. Mitchell of 6 Andrus Place, was killed in action in Vietnam Friday, according to word received by his family Saturday.

Sgt. Mitchell was killed when a hand grenade was thrown into the helicopter in which he was a paratrooper passenger.

Born in Bar Harbor, Maine, he was the son of Mr. and Mrs. Lawrence A. Mitchell of Norwood. A graduate of Norwood High School and Norwood Junior High School, he had been employed by Kendall Mills in Walpole.

He enlisted in the Army Sept. 24, 1963, and attended NCO school in Germany where he won two top honor graduate awards, the Commandant’s Inspection Award and the Gen. Bruce C. Clark Award. He married during his tour of duty in Germany. He spent two years in Germany with the 7th Army and last April left for Vietnam with the 173rd Airborne Brigade. He had re-enlisted for two additional years.

In addition to his wife and parents, he is survived by a son, Norbert Mitchell, 3; a one-year-old daughter; and a sister, Miss Brenda Mitchell of New Britain, Conn. Funeral arrangements will be made by the Paul H. Kraw Funeral Home, 1248 Washington St.
