The summer of 1992 in Norwood, Massachusetts, was a time of sunshine and warm weather, but also a time of controversy and dispute among the local baseball community. The story of how the 2nd Norwood coach patched up a dispute highlights the vital importance of sportsmanship and fair play.

In the early 1990s, the American Legion Baseball league was a popular summer activity for young athletes. Among the participating squads were the Randolph all-stars, a group of talented young players who had been training hard to compete against the best teams in the area. However, on one fateful weekend in July 1992, disaster struck for the Randolph team. They were scheduled to play against the Norwood American League team in a crucial tournament match, but their chances of winning were severely hampered by an obscure rule invoked by Bill Rapp, the coach of the Norwood team.

According to this rule, teams were required to have at least twelve players available. With only ten youngsters present, Randolph was forced to forfeit their match against Norwood, effectively eliminating them from the tournament. The Randolph coach, Kevin Sullivan, was understandably upset, arguing that his team had been unfairly penalized and that the rule had not been clearly communicated beforehand. Meanwhile, Bill Rapp defended his decision, stating the rule was designed to prevent stacking teams, though critics felt he had lost sight of simply letting kids play ball.

As the dispute continued to simmer, a solution was finally found thanks to the intervention of Wayne Headley, coach of the Norwood National League team. Wayne Headley called Kevin Sullivan and invited the Randolph team to play against the Norwood National League team in a special exhibition match. This gesture of goodwill paved the way for both sides to put their differences aside.

The special match took place on July 31, 1992, at Oberlander Field in Randolph. The atmosphere was triumphant as both teams came together for a memorable game of baseball. As young Norwood player Jamie Stoddard aptly put it, “I think they should play. It was sort of unfair what happened to them”, capturing the true spirit of community sportsmanship.
