In July 1965, Norwood officials debated whether the police department should begin using trained police dogs. Police Chief James Murphy described the idea as “a progressive move,” but questioned whether the town truly needed canine units at that time. The discussion centered on both practicality and readiness, with Murphy noting that Providence police officials recommended at least five years of experience for any officer assigned to work with a dog.
Selectman John A. Abdallah voiced strong opposition, stating that Norwood did not want or need dogs for police work. The debate reflected broader questions about modernizing the department, balancing new policing methods with the town’s size, needs, and budget.
The conversation also touched on another proposed equipment purchase: a motorcycle and sidecar costing $2,200. Murphy argued that a motorcycle officer could patrol downtown areas more effectively and help curb parking violations. Both proposals — canine units and motorcycle patrols — were sent for further review, with final recommendations to be made later.
The article captured a moment when Norwood weighed modernization against tradition, considering how new tools and techniques might reshape local policing.
