Device Readily Locates Foreign Substance Imbedded In The Flesh

A giant, magnet used in locating and removing foreign matter from the human body, has been presented to the Norwood Hospital as a gift from Mr. Tobe Deutschmann, president of the Tobe Deutschmann Corp, of Route 1, Norwood.

The device, which is now available for use at the hospital whenever the occasion arises, will locate by the simple method of moving the magnet slowly over the skin, a piece of foreign substance imbedded as deep as two inches in the flesh. When the substance comes into magnetic contact with the “iron,’’ there is a noticeable elevation in the flesh, which tells the surgeon where to make an incision.

There has been a definite need for such a magnet at the hospital for some time. When he heard of this, Tobe Deutschmann delved into his vast stock of surplus war goods and came up with the answer.

This type of magnet was used effectively during the war in re-moving shrapnel from the bodies of wounded servicemen.

The presentation of the magnet was made Tuesday afternoon with Administrator Robert Brown accepting the gift for the hospital.
