MRS WILLARD EVERETT, 90.

Norwood Woman is Oldest Native Resident of the Town.

Mrs Willard Everett, the oldest native-born resident of Norwood, celebrated her 90th birthday yesterday at her home, 143 Walpole St.

A remarkable milestone was observed yesterday at 143 Walpole Street, where Mrs. Willard Everett, Norwood’s oldest native‑born resident, celebrated her 90th birthday. Born in 1822, when the community was still known as South Dedham, Mrs. Everett is believed to be the oldest person in town and a living link to Norwood’s earliest days.

Her maiden name was Sarah Morse, daughter of David and Nancy Morse, members of one of the oldest families in this section. Though her husband has been gone for more than fifty years, she is still best known throughout town by his name: Mrs. Willard Everett.

Despite blindness and a recent cold, she remains in full possession of her faculties. She received visitors from her bed, assisted by her neighbor, Mrs. Arthur Black, who helped welcome the steady stream of callers throughout the day.

A Morning of Music and Warm Wishes

Among the first to arrive were Rev. Arthur Howe Pingree, pastor of the Congregational Church, and Mrs. Pingree. While they were present, the “Little Women,” a group of young girls from the church, entered the home and sang for Mrs. Everett, bringing her great delight.

In the afternoon, Mrs. Margaret Van Hovenburg Morrill visited and sang “The Holy City,” a performance that deeply pleased the honored celebrant. One of the youngest callers of the day was Thais Harding, just 10 months old, whose presence added a charming contrast to the longevity being celebrated.

Mrs. Everett received a profusion of flowers, filling her room with color and fragrance.

A Life Rooted in Norwood’s Earliest History

Mrs. Everett has lived in her present home for more than 50 years and remains a devoted member of the Congregational Church. Her long life spans the transformation of South Dedham into the thriving town of Norwood, and her memories reach back to a time before the railroad, before the mills, and before the town’s incorporation.

Her family connections extend into some of the region’s oldest and most established lines, making her birthday not only a personal celebration but a moment of historical reflection for the entire community.

A Town Honors Its Oldest Daughter

As friends, neighbors, church members, and well‑wishers came throughout the day, the affection shown to Mrs. Everett reflected the esteem in which she is held. Her longevity, character, and deep roots in Norwood’s past make her a cherished figure in the town’s living history.
