Braves, Indians To Clash Thursday For Norwood Little League Crown-This Day in Norwood History-July 1, 1964

The town championship of the Norwood Little League for 1964 will be decided tomorrow night at the Pleasant Street Field when the Union Savings Bank Braves, winners Of the National League pennant, and the Westover Indians, American League title holders clash in a 6 o’clock contest.

The Indians, coached by Bob Paquette, who has been at the helm for nine years, have a season record of 13 wins and three losses, while the Braves, coached by Frank Wall, have won 15 games and lost only one. The game shapes up as a battle of good, pitching against a solid defense.

The Indians have probably the fastest pitcher in Little League in 11-year-old lefthander Billy Travers, who has a 7-2 season record. Travers overwhelmed the opposition in his last two games as he struck out 34 of the 36 batters to face him and allowed only two hits. He is also a top hitter.

On the mound for the Braves will be Pete (Tappy) Tamulonis, who sports a season record of seven wins against no losses. Dave Thomas, Braves shortstop, is also a standout moundman, having won seven games and lost only one.

The Braves are a top defensive team, winning six one-run games this season. The key figures in the Braves defense are veteran catcher Capt. Jerry McDermott who hasn’t allowed a passed ball in four, years of regular catching, along with big Doug Fisher at first and slick-fielding Dave Thomas at short.

The Indians have an excellent catcher in Terry Tiernan, who has a strong arm. Terry is also the Indians’ best hitter with three home runs. Other key figures for the Indians are slick fielding Jerry McTernan, big Eddie Murphy; who-can also pitch and belt the ball, and veteran shortstop Jim Doyle.

The game figures to be a low-scoring affair with Travers the key. If he pitches like he did in the last two games, he will be hard to hit. The Braves who have only allowed more than four runs in one game this year have a couple of boys who can stroke the ball in Doug Fisher and left fielder Steve Costello.

Aiding Paquette for the Indians are Bud McTernan and Joe Corbett, and aiding Frank Wall for the Braves are Bob Ivatts and Gary Maus.
