The renovated Southern Theater is not recognizable from the Old Southern with its recent changes and with many more on the way.
By comparison, the theatre previously had a seating capacity of about 400 and now it can seat about 500 persons. The new Southern has a sloping floor which makes for better visibility from any seat in the theatre. The seats themselves are a spring cushion seat fully upholstered with a velour back. As one patron remarked, “I sat through the entire three-hour show without changing positions” which in itself speaks well of their comfort.
The side walls are in coral rose and peach. The dado is in Chinese red. The stage draperies are of burnt orange velvet. The entire color scheme gives a theatre a soft and homelike appearance and. adds to the general plesantness. Not to forget to mention the soft lush carpet through the aisles and in the lobby.
Mrs. Lynch tells us that the candy-bar and pop com machine are well stocked with a variety of goodies.
The height of the ceiling plus the acoustic walls make for clear sound reception. Screen is of the latest test type. The projection facilities have the most up-to-date equipment and in the near future the Southern will be equipped with air conditioning. Another feature will be aisle lighting and arrangements are being made for that now. An innovation for the Southern will be matinees Wednesdays and Saturday afternoons plus continuous shows Sundays and holidays. The evening shows start at 6:30 P.M.
