TSgt. Stephen P. Flaherty Returns After 35 Months In South Pacific

A telegram was received yesterday by Mr. and Mrs. Michael J. Flaherty from their son. T/Sgt. Stephen P. Flaherty. U. S. Army Air Forces, announcing his arrival in San Francisco after spending 35 months in the South Pacific.

Sgt. Flaherty left the states in January. 1942. and landed in Australia. Subsequently, he went on to New Guinea with Gen. MacArthur’s fliers as a parachute rigger. He was attached to the famed “Grim Reapers” of the 5th Air Force when he received his orders to report back to the states.

A graduate of Norwood High School where he captained the foot- j ball team in his senior year and played on Benny Murray’s baseball teams, Sgt. Flaherty has another brother in the service. Platoon Sgt. William J.. U. S. Marine Corps, who recently returned to San Diego. Cal., after spending a 30-day leave at home. The latter, too. saw overseas service, spending 22 months in the South Pacific before being shipped home to recover from malaria.

According to Sgt. Flaherty’s telegram. he expects to get back to Norwood January 4th, 1945.
