ASSAM, India—Edward F. Wenzel, 26. son of Mrs. Helen F. Wenzel of 46 Chapel Street, Norwood, has been promoted to the rank of Private 1st Class in the Army overseas.
Employed by Winslow Bros. & Smith prior to his induction. Pfc. Wenzel entered the Armed Forces at Fort Devens approximately 17 months ago. He was stationed at Camp Thomas A. Scott, Fort Wayne, Ind., before he went overseas.
Wenzel, who is a Medical Corps soldier, has been in India for the past eleven months. His unit takes care of the American Military Railway Service troops who are operating the metre-gauge Bengal & Assam Railway. Under the Transportation Service of the India Burma SOS, these American soldiers have increased by more than 100% the carrying capacity of the line. Carrying the bulk of the supplies destined for the builders of the Ledo Road, the forces driving the Japs from Burma, and for the planes which fly the “hump” route to China, it is one of the most vital lines of communication in the India Rurmn Theatre of Operations.
