Master Sergeant Sigyr R. Gustafson Wins Bronze Star Medal

AN EIGHTH AIR FORCE BOMBER STATION. England — Master Sergeant Sigyr R. Gustafson, 28, nephew of Mr. and Mrs. Arvid Hermanson of Norwood, has been awarded the Bronze Star Medal, it was recently announced by Colonel James S. Sutton of Findlay. Ohio, commanding officer of the 306th Bomb Group.

Sergeant Gustafson received the decoration for outstanding services as crew chief of the Flying Fortress “Dinglcbcrry Kids.” This plane has flown on 82 missions, more than any other plane in the group, due to the careful maintenance performed on it by Sgt. Gustafson and his crew.

This group is one of those of the First Bombardment Division which was awarded a Presidential Unit Citation for “extraordinary heroism, determination, and esprit de corps” in carrying out a highly successful daylight operation against enemy aircraft plants at Oschcrslcben, Germany, on January 11, 1941.

Before entering the Army Air Forces in June, 1941. Gustafson was employed as a shipping clerk by Bird and Son. East Walpole.
