1961 School Bus Routes Set-This Day In Norwood History-August 24, 1961

Dr. Philip O. Coakley, Norwood Superintendent of Schools, calls the attention of parents and students to the bus routes which will be in effect when school re-opens on September 6.

Each trip is listed and described below. It is suggested to all concerned that this article be clipped and kept for ready reference.

Students are eligible for transportation if their place of residence in Norwood conforms to the foilowing minimum distances from their assigned school, as measured by the shortest traveled route.

Senior High School, Grades 9,10,11,12—two miles.

Junior High School, Grades 7, 8—one and one-half miles.

Elementary schools, Grades Kindergarten, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6—one and one-quarter miles.

Eligible kindergarten pupils attending the morning session ride to school on the regular trips, however special trips are necessary for dismissal at the close of the morning session.

Eligible kindergarten pupils attending the afternoon session require special trips at the opening of the afternoon session. However, at dismissal, these pupils ride home on the regular school trips.

TRIP NO. 1. For Balch School students residing on First, Second, Third, Joy, nearby Gay, Sunnyside and Pleasant Streets.
At 8:05 a.m. this bus will start picking up Balch School students at the corner of East Cross and Second Streets. It will proceed along Second Street to Gay, along Gay to Joy, to Sunnyside, to Pleasant, to the Balch School via Pleasant, Dean and Washington Streets.

TRIP. NO 2. For Balch School Students residing on West Border Road, Arnold, Audubon, Fourth, Fifth, Sixth and nearby Gay Streets.
At 8.05 a.m., this bus will start picking up Balch School students at the corner ot Sixth St. and East Cross. It will proceed along West Border Roa’d to Arnold, along Arnold to Sixth, to Gay, along Gay to Fourth, to the Balch School via Pleasant, Dean and Washington Streets.

TRIP NO. 3. For Balch School students residing on Summer, Union, nearby Pleas, ant, Sunset, upper Rockhill and Mylod Streets.
At 8 00 a.m,, this bus will start picking up Balch School students at Pleasant and Sunset Streets. It will proceed to Sumner; across Route No. 1 to Union, along Union to Washi |;ton Street, to Rockhill, to the Balch School.

TRIP NO. 4. For Callahan School students residing in the “Ellis Garden” Aren.
At 8:00 a m , this bus will start picking up Callahan School students at the corner of Clapboardtree Street and Upland Road. It will proceed to Washington Street, along Washington to Ellis Avenue, to Forbes, to Neponset, to the Callahan School via Pleasant and Garfield Streets.

TRIP NO. 5. For Callahan School students residing In the “Ellis Garden” area.
At 8:00 a.m. this bus will start picking up Callahan School students.at the corner of Everett street and Route 1. It will proceed along Everett street to Margaret, to Neponset, to the Callahan School via Pleasant and Garfield.

TRIP NO. 6. For Cleveland School students residing In the “Shady Arbor” area. At 8:15 a.m. this bus will start picking up Cleveland School students at the corner of Winter and Hawthorne streets. It will proceed along to Winter, to Spruce, along Spruce to Hickory, along Hickory to Spruce; left on Spruce, back to Winter, to the Cleveland School.

TRIP NO. 7. For Junior High School students residing in the “Ellis Garden” area and nearby on Clapboardtree Street.
At 7:45 a.m. this bus will start picking up Junor High School students at the corner of Upland road and Clapboardtree street. -It will proceed to the corner of Margaret and Washington streets, to the corner of Ellis and Washington streets, to the Junior High School.

TRIP NO. 8. For Junior .High School students residing in the “Ellis Garden” area.
At 7:45 a.m. this bus will start picking up Junior High School students at the corner of Neponset and Washington streets. It will proceed to the
corner of Achorn and Washington streets, then to the Junior High School.

TRIP NO. 9 For Junior High School students residing in the vicinity of Neponset Valley Farm and across (East of) Route No. 1.
At 7:30 a.m. this bus will start picking up Junior High School Students at Neponset Valley Farm. It will proceed via the overpass to the corner of Ridgewood and lower Neponset streets, along Ridgewood to Access road, to Neponset street, to Westview drive, to the Junior High School.

TRIP NO. 10. For Junior High School students residing (East of) Route No. 1.
At 7:30 a.m. this bus will start picking up Junior High School students at the corner of Norton drive and Neponset street. It will proceed to Neponset and Ridgewood, to Dean and Edgehill, to Dean and Windsor, to Route 1; then to the Junior High School via Dean and Washington streets.

TRIP NO. 11. For Senior High School students residing in the ’’Ellis Garden” area.
At 7:30 a.m. this bus will start picking up Senior High School students at the junction of Washington and Neponset streets. It will proceed along Washington street to Achorn, to the Senior High School

TRIP NO. 12. For Senior High School students residing In the ‘‘Ellis Garden” area and nearby on Clapboardtree Street.
At 7-30 a.m. this bus will start picking up students at the junction of Clapboardtree Street and Upland Road. It will proceed along Washington Street to Margaret, to Ellis, to the Senior High School, corner of Tamworth and Cran-1 more Streets. It will proceed along Cranmore to Richland Road to Dean Street, along Dean to Route 1, across Route el to Saint Catherine School via Dean and Washington Streets.

TRIP NO. 13. For Senior High School Students residing across (east of) Route No. 1, on North Plain Street East Cross Street, Ridge Road, Elda Drive, Orchard Lane, Longwood Terrace, Westview Drive. Edgehill Road, Glendale Road, Lancaster Lane, Windsor Road, and Dean Street. At 7:30 a.m., this bus will start picking up Senior High School students at the corner of Ridge Road and Neponset Street. It will proceed along Neponset to Westview, to Dean; along Dean to Edgehill; along Edgehill to Windsor; along Windsor back to Dean Street.

TRIP NO. 14 For Senior High School students residing across (east, of) Route No. 1 on Neponset Street (from No. 777 to the Canton Line), Norton Drive, Deerfield Road, Richland Road, Bel-nap Road, Prescott Road, Tamworth Road and Cranmore Road. At 7:30 a.m., this bus will start picking up Senior High School students at the corner of Norton Drive and Neponset Street. It will proceed to Dean, along Dean to Richland, to Cranmore, to Tamworth., to Dean, to the Senior High Schoo).

TRIP NO. 15. For Senior High School students residing across (East of) Route No. 1 on Ridgewood Drive, Access Road, Coral Lane, Glenoe Road, Azalea Drive, Juniper Drive, Yew Drive, Heather Drive, Meadow Road and Neponset Street up to No. 777 (Junction of Dean and Neponset Streets) and In the vicinity of Neponset Valley Farm. At 7:30 A.M., this bus will start picking up Senior High School students at Neponset Valley Farm. It will proceed across the overpass along Neponset Street to Ridgewood Drive near Meadow Road). It will turn left on Ridgewood and proceed along Ridgewood to Kenwood, to Coral, to Access, to Neponset, to the Senior High School.

TRIP NO. 16. For Saint Catherine School students residing In the Richland Road, Tamworth, Lancaster and nearby Dean Street area. At 8:05 A.M., this bus will start picking up Saint Catherine School students at the

TRIP NO. 17. For Saint Catherine students residing in the area of Sixth Street, and across the highway (Route No. 1) East Cross, Ridge Road and Neponset Street, Norton Drive and Deerfield Road. At 7:45 a.m. this bus will start picking up Saint Catherine School students at the corner of Sixth Street and East Cross It will proceed across Route 1 via the overpass to the corner of Ridge Road and Neponset Street, along Neponset Street to Norton Drive. It will turn around at Norton Drive and will proceed to Saint Catherine School via Neponset and Nahatan streets.

TRIP NO. 18. For Saint Catherine School students residing on Neponset Street (lower end) in the Ridgewood Drive, access Road area—and In the Longwood, Elda, Westview Drive section. At 7:45 a.m this bus will start picking up Saint Catherine School students at the corner of Ridgewood and lower Neponset streets. It will proceed to the corner of Neponset Street and Access Road, along Neponset to East Cross to Longwood Terrace, to Elda Drive, to Westview Drive, back to Neponset Street, to Dean Street along Dean to Washington to Saint Catherine School.

TRIP NO. 19. For Saint Catherine students residing in the Kenwood, Juniper, Yew, Heather, Azalea, and Meadow Street area, and In the Edgehill, Glendale and Lancaster area. At 8:05 a m. this bus will start picking up Saint Catherine School students at the corner of Azalea and Meadow. It will proceed along Dean to Edgehlll, along Edgehill to Lanaster, along Lancaster to Dean, to Neponset, to Saint Catherine School via Nahatan Street.

TRIP NO. 20. For Saint Catherine School students residing in the “Ellis Garden” area and nearby Clapboard-tree Street. At 8.00 a.m. this bus will start picking up Saint Catherine School students at the corner of Clapboardtree street and Upland road. It will proceed along Washington street to Margaret, to Ellis avenue, to Neponset street to Saint Catherine School via Washington street.

TRIP NO. 21. For Saint Catherine School students residing on Pleasant Street (south of Dean St.), Sun-set, Sumner. Union, Rockhill and South Norwood. At 7:45 a.m. this bus will start picking up Saint Catherine School students at the corner of Dean and Pleasant streets. It will proceed along Pleasant street to Sunset, to Sumner, to Union, to Washington, to Rockhill,’ to Saint George St. (Balch School) to Saint Catherine School.

TRIP NO. 22. For Saint Catherine Schoo! students . residing in the “Hillshire” “Plimpton” are.
At 7:45 a.m. this bus will start picking up Saint Catherine School students at the corner of Walpole and Endicott streets. It will proceed along Walpole to Woodbine, to Laurel, to Hillshire; along Chapel to Bruce, to Walpole street, to Saint Catherine School.

TRIP NO. 23. For Saint Catherine School students residing In the “Bornwood” & Pellana Road areas.
At 7.45 a.m. this bus will start picking up Saint Catherine School students at the corner of Pleasant place and Dean streets. It will proceed to Birch and Pleasant street, then to Saint Catherine School.

TRIP NO. 24. For Junior and Senior High School students residing on Sunset Avenue, Talbot Avenue, Northview Avenue, nearby’ on Pleasant Street, Sumner Street, Union Street, Stone Circle, Rockhill Street and Mylod Street.
At 7:30 a.m. this bus will start picking up Junior and Senior High School students at the junction of Dean and Pleasant streets. It will proceed along Pleasant to Sunset, to Sumner and across Route 1 to Sumner and Union. It” will then proceed to the “RockhiJl” section, along Washington to the Junior High School, to the Senor High School.

TRIP NO. 25. For Saint Catherine School and Junior High School students residing In Rustic Acres, Wilson St. and Fisher Street and Westover.
At 7:45 A.M., this bus will start picking up Junior High and Saint Catherine School students at Rustic Acres. It will proceed along Walpole St. to Wilson, along Wilson to Brook, along Brook to Nichols, along Nichols, to Geraldine, to Fisher, along Fisher to Saint Catherine School.

RETURN TRIPS HOME

Return trips home originate at school at dismissal time or shortly thereafter.

TRIP R1. For Balch School Students residing on First, Second, Third, Joy, nearby Gay, Sunnyside and Pleasant Street This bus will pick up students at the Balch School. It will proceed to the junction of Gay and Sunnyside; along Gay to Joy, to Second; along Second to East Cross Street.

TRIP R2. For Balch School students residing on West Border Road, Arnold, Audubon. Fourth, Fifth, Sixth, and nearby Gay Streets. This bus will pick up students at the Balch School. It will proceed to the junction of Gay and Fourth, along Fourth to Sixth, along Sixth to West Border Road, to Audubon.

TRIP R3. For Balch School students residing on Sumner, Union, nearby Pleasant, Sunset, upper Rockhill, and Mylod Streets. This bus will pick up children at the Balch School It will proceed to the junction of Pleasant and Sunset Streets, along Pleasant to Sumner, across Route 1 to Sumner and Union, along Union to Washington, to “Rockhill.”

TRIP R4. For Callahan School students residing in the “Ellis Garden” area. This bus will pick up children at the Callahan School. It will proceed to the junction of Neponset and Washington Streets, along Washington to Forbes, to Ellis, to Upland Road, to Clapboardtree Street.

TRIP R5. For Callahan School students residing- In the “Ellis Garden” area. This bus will pick up students at the Callahan School. It will proceed to the junction of Neponset and Washington Streets; along Washington to Margaret, to Everett, along Everett to Route 1,

TRIP RD9 For Junior Higli School students residing in the vicinity of Neponset Valley Farm and across (east of) Route No. 1. This bus will pick up students at the Junior High School and proceed to Neponset Valley Farm It will proceed via the overpass to the comer of Ridgewood, and lower Neponset streets, along Ridgewood to Access road, to Neponset street, along Neponset street to Westview drive, to Dean street.

TRIP R10. For Junior High School students residing across (east of) Route No. 1. This bus will pick up students at the Junior High School. It will proceed to the junction of Dean and Windsor streets, along Windsor to Edgehill, along Edgehill to Glendale, continuing along Edgehill to Dean Street, to Neponset, to Norton Drive.

TRIP R11. For Senior High School students residing In the “‘Ellis Garden” area. This bus will pick up students at the Senior High School It will proceed to t| e junction of Achorn and Washington streets; then along Washington Street to Neponset Street.

TRIP R12. For Senior High School students residing In the ‘”Ellis Gardens” area and nearby on Clapboardtree Street. This bus will pick up students at the Senior High School. It will proceed to the junction of Ellis Avenue and Washington Street. along Washington to Margaret, to Upland road, to Clapboardtree Street

Ixmgwood Terrace, Westview Drive, Edgehill Road, Glendale Road, Lancaster Lane, Windsor Road, and Dean Street. This bus will pick up students at the Senior High School. It will proceed to the junction of Dean and Windsor streets, along Windsor to Edgehill, along Edgehill to Glendale, continuing on Edge-hill to Dean, to Neponset, along Neponset to Westview. to Ridge Road.

TRIP R14. For Senior High School students residing across (east of) Route No. 1 on Neponset Street (from No. 777 to the Canton Line), Norton Drive, Deerfield Road, Richland Road, Be!-nap Road, Prescott Road, Tamworth Road, and Cranmore Road. This bus will pick up students at the Senior High School. It will proceed to the junction of Tamworth and Dean; along Tamworth to Cranmore, to Richland, along Richland to Dean, along Dean to Neponset, along Neponset to Norton drive.

TRIP R15. For Senior High School students residing across (east of) Route No. 1 on Ridgewood Drive, Access Road, Coral Lane, Glen-more Road, Azalea Drive, Juniper Drive, Yew Drive, Heather Drive, Meadow Road, and Neponset Street up to No. 777 (Junction of —BUS ROUTE— Dean and Neponset Streets) and Neponset Valley Farm. This bus will pick up students at the Senior High School. It will proceed to Neponset Valley Farm, cross the Route 1 overpass and proceed to the junction of Ridgewood and Neponset, along Ridgewood to Kenwood, to Coral, to Access, to Neponset.

TRIP R16. For Saint Catherine School students residing in the Richland Road, Tam-worth, Lancaster, and nearby Dean Street area.
This bus will start picking up students at Saint Cathe-fine School It will proceed to the junction of Dean Street and Route -1, along Dean to Tamworth, to Cranmore. to Richland, continuing along Richland to Dean.

TRIP R17. For Saint Cather-ine School students resid- Ing In the area of Sixth Street, and across (east of) Route No. I, East Cross, -Ridge Road, Neponset Street, Norton Drive and Deerfield Road.
This bus will pick up students at Saint Catherine School. It will proceed to the junction of Sixth and East Cross. It will cross Route 1 via the overpass and proceed along Neponset to Ridge Road, to Norton Drive.

TRIP R18. For Saint Catherine School students residing across (east of) Route No. 1 on Neponset Street (lower end) in the Ridgewood Drive — Access Road area and in the Longwood, Elda, Westview Drive section. This bus will pick up students at Saint Catherine School. It will proceed to the junction of Access Road and Neponset Street, along Neponset to East Cross, to Longwood Terrace, to Elda Drive, to Westview, back to Neponset, to Dean.

TRIP K19. tor saint Catherine School students residing in the Kenwood, Juniper, Yew, Heather, Azalea, Meadow Street area and in the area of Edgehill Road, Glendale and Lancaster area.
This bus will pick up students at Saint Catherine School It will proceed to the junction of Lancaster and Dean, along Lancaster to Edgehill, continuing on Edgehill to Dean, to Neponset, to Meadow, to Azalea.

TRIP R20. For Saint Catherine School students residing in the “Ellis Garden” area and nearby’ on Clapboard-tree Street.
This bus will pick up students at Saint Catherine School. It will proceed to the junction of Washington and Neponset streets, along Washington to Forbes, to Ellis, to Upland Road and Clapboardtree streets.

TRIP R21. For Saint Catherine School students residing on Pleasant Street (south of Dean), Sunset, Sumner, Union, Rockhill and South Norwood.
This bus picks up students at Saint Catherine School and proceeds to South Norwood (Balch), along Washington to Rockhill, to Union, along Union to Sumner and Union, along Sumner to Pleasant, along Pleasant to Sunset, to Dean.

TRIP R22. For Saint Catherine School students residing in the “Hillshire” “Plympton” area.
This bus will pick up students at Saint Catherine School. It will proceed to the junction of Walpole and Endicott streets, along Walpole Street to Woodbine, along Woodbine to Laurel, to Hillshire, along Chapel Street to Bruce Road.

TRIP R23. For Sauit Catherine School students residing in the “Bornwood” and Pellana Road area.
This bus will pick up students at St. Catherine School. It will proceed to the junction of Pleasant Place and Dean Street, along Pleasant Place to Birch Road and Pleasant Street.

TRIP R24B. For Junior High School students residing on Sunset Avenue, Talbot Avenue. Northview Avenue, nearby on Pleasant Street, Sumner Street, Union Street, Stone Circle. Rockhill Street and Mylod Street.
This bus will pick up students at the Junior High School. It will proceed to the junction of Dean and Pleasant streets, along Pleasant to Sunset, to Sumner, across Route 1 to Sumner and Union. It will then proceed to the “Rockhill” section.

TRIP 25A. For Junior High School students residing in Rustic Acres, upper Wilson Street and Westover.
This bus will pick up students at the Junior High School. It will proceed to Rustic Acres. It will then proceed along Wilson Street to Brook, along Brook to Nichols, along Nichols to Harrow Road.

TRIP 25B. For Saint Catherine School students residing in Rustic Acres, Westover, and in the Wilson and Fisher Street Sections.
This bus will pick up students at Saint Catherine School. It will proceed to the junction of Walpole and Fisher Streets; along Fisher to Nichols, along Nichols to Geraldine, to Brook, to Wilson, along Wilson to Rustic Acres.

KINDERGARTEN TRIPS

Kindergarten trips are designated by the name of the school followed by the letter “K” and a numeral.

These trips are necessary once a day only. This is because it is possible for eligible kindergarteners to ride either to or from school at least once each day on the regular school trip. i

Also, each trip is necessary every other month .only and occurs either at the close of the morning session or at the opening of the afternoon session. Each is planned to coincide with the alternating monthly schedule of kindergarten sessions.

TRIP K-l Callahan. For Callahan School Kindergarten pupils residing in the “Ellis Garden” area when attending the morning session. At 10.45 A.M., this bus will pick up students at the Callahan School and will proceed along Pleasant Street to Neponset, to Washington Street, to Upland Road, to Clapboardtree Street; then along Everett Street (if necessary) to Route =1. (This trip every other month only.)

TRIP K-2 Callahan. For Callahan School Kindergarten pupils residing in the “Ellis Garden” area when attending the afternoon session.
At 12:40 P.M., this bus will start picking up students at Clapboardtree Street. It will proceed to Washington Street, along Washington Street to Margaret, to Ellis, to Neponset, to Pleasant, to Garfield, to the Callahan School. (This trip every other month only.)

TRIP BALCH KINDERGARTEN No. 1. For Balch School Kindergarten pupils residing on First through Sixth Street, Arnold, Audubon, etc., and in the Sumner-Union, upper Pleasant Street, and the Rockhill and Mylod Street areas . . . when attending the morning session.
At 11’00 a.m., this bus will pick up Kindergarten pupils | at the Balch School. It will proceed to Rockhill and Mylod Streets, along Washington Street to Union, along Union to Sumner, along Sumner to Pleasant, along Pleasant to Gay, along Gay to Joy, to Third, to Sixth, to Arnold Road, along Arnold to West Border Road, along West Border Road, to Sixth and East Cross. (This trip every other month only.)

TRIP BALCH KINDERGARTEN NO. 2. For Balch School Kindergarten pupils residing on First through Sixth Streets, Arnold, Audubon, etc., in the Sumner-Union and the Rockhill and Mylod Street areas … when attending the afternoon session.
At 12:40 P.M., this bus will start picking up Balch School kindergarten pupils at the junction of Sixth Street and East Cross. It will proceed along West Border Road to Arnold, along Arnold to Sizth, to Gay, along Gay to Third, to Joy, to Pleasant, along Pleasant to Sunset, to Sumner, along Sumner to Union, along Union to Washington Street, along Washington to Rockhill and Mylod Streets, along Washington to the Balch School. (This trip every other month.)
