After more than 21 years of service, Sgt. Nicholas P. Curran retired Tuesday night from his duties on the Norwood Police force.
Sgt. Curran has been eligible for retirement for some months under the Veterans Act, He submitted his application for retirement at the last meeting of the Board of Selectmen and the application was subsequently approved.
His retirement is effective as of September 1, 1945 However, he had several “days off” due him, so wound up his duties this week.
Sgt. Curran, one of the most popular and widely known police officers in this area, entered the employ of the town on April 27, 1924. He was elevated to the rank of sergeant in January, 1936. During World War I. he saw action in the submarine service of the U. S Navy.
Following a siege of illness within the past two years, which confined him to his home for some time, Sgt. Curran has been on day duty at the desk at police headquarters.
While Sgt. Curran has joined the retired list, he will not remain wholly inactive. His immediate plans are to take over the* management of the small variety store at 2 Guild Street, which has been operated for the past 31 years by Salvatore Costa, who himself is retiring from business. As manager of the store, which will be renamed the Guild Variety Store, “Nick” plans to put through extensive renovations and add several new lines of merchandise to those already offered.
Sgt. Curran resides with his wife and family at 22 Marion Avenue, Norwood.
