
A Demolition Derby and a special qualifying race for Sportsman Division drivers will highlight the stock car program at Norwood Arena next week.
The Demolition Derby, third of the season at the paved and banked quarter-mile speedway, will be held Wednesday, August 7. More than 100 cars will participate in the zany fender-smashing spectacle.
The special qualifying race for Sportsman Division cars will be held Saturday night, August 10. The first four finishers will be guaranteed starting positions in the 200-mile NASCAR National Championship race August 18 at the one-mile Trenton, New Jersey Speedway.
Competing for the four qualifying spots will be Norwood’s top drivers. They include Bill Slater of Danielson, Conn., who leads the latest standings with 576 points, and Johnny Thompson of Stonington, Conn., who has 532 points.
Other leaders are Wally Silva of Lincoln, Mass., with 520 points, Ralph (Hop) Harrington of Pawtucket, R. I., with 502; Mario (Fats) Caruso of Shrewsbury, Mass., with 434 and Leo Cleary of Quincy with 402.
Hobby Division leaders who’ll be competing in the regular weekly races Saturday night are Bay Staters Bob Santos of Millis, 508, Glen Legere, Braintree, 502; Al Johnson, Hanover, 444; Peter Hamilton, Newton, 390; and Bill Darling, Taunton, 356
