The long-expected, long-promised turnout on Washington street has become an accomplished fact. Cars of the Norfolk and Bristol Street railway have been running down to Railroad Avenue all the week and by next week cars on the Norwood, Canton and Sharon roads will be running down there also.
The Norfolk and Bristol motormen and conductors have acted a little new on their extended line and have seemed a little in doubt as to where the white posts and the usual stopping places were. They have had other troubles of their own in accommodating the longer route to their usual running time and in keeping the passengers from tumbling off the car at the old Walpole Street terminus, instead of waiting till the more proper stopping place at Day street was reached. On the whole, however, the new service has gone into operation without much friction.
The system is a great success and a great accommodation to the public. It will tend to equalize conditions in the business sections of town and has already had quite a stimulating effect on stores in the Railroad Avenue and Nahatan Street neighborhoods. This week the Norwood, Canton, and Sharon people have been connecting their lines with the Old Colony tracks at Day Street and have had a big gang of workmen employed.
One or two shade trees had to be sacrificed in making the connection. These improvements have been long in coming but will be much appreciated now they are here. People from Mansfield, Foxboro, Walpole, Canton, Sharon, and Stoughton can now ride into the very heart of the business center of Norwood and will no longer be compelled to leave the cars on the outskirts of the town.
