Facing an October 31 deadline imposed by the state Department of Revenue, the Board of Selectmen agreed last night to place a request for $226,000 on the warrant for the upcoming special town meeting to fund mandatory property revaluation at 100 percent market value.
Commissioner of Revenue L. Joyce Hampers warned selectmen in an August 31 letter that failure to appropriate the funds by the October 31 deadline will result in the town being referred to the Attorney General’s office for court action, alongside potential deductions in state aid cherry sheets. The annual town meeting in May previously rejected the appropriation after Town Counsel Justin C. Barton advised that immediate compliance was not strictly required. Selectmen voted to request a second legal opinion from Barton in light of the state’s ultimatum, while setting a special meeting tomorrow night to officially schedule the fall town meeting date requested by Board of Assessors Chairman James R. Drummey.
