On the evening of Saturday, July 11, 2026, a dramatic accident occurred when a school bus crashed into the front entrance of The Chateau, an Italian restaurant located at 404 Boston-Providence Hwy. in Norwood. The incident took place at 10:21 p.m., shortly after the restaurant and bar had concluded operations for the night. According to reports from the Norwood Police Department, the bus had just completed a drop-off of passengers at a nearby hotel minutes before the driver lost control and drove the vehicle up the front stairs and directly into the front door of the establishment. At the time of the collision, there were no students on board the bus, and the driver was the sole occupant of the vehicle.
Emergency responders, including the Norwood Fire Department, arrived on the scene shortly after the crash to provide assistance. While one person was reportedly seated on the restaurant’s patio at the moment of impact, the owners confirmed that no one inside the building or on the premises was injured. However, the driver of another vehicle involved in the accident sustained minor injuries and was transported from the scene by emergency medical services. The Norwood Fire Department acted quickly to stabilize the bus, contain a fluid leak that had resulted from the collision, and secure the building’s utilities to prevent further hazards. Authorities remained at the site for approximately an hour to ensure the area was safe before awaiting an assessment by the local building inspector.
By Sunday morning, repair crews had begun working on the damaged structure, as the restaurant had been scheduled to host two functions the following Monday. The full extent of the structural damage was assessed by the building inspector and the property owners on Sunday, though the timeline for when The Chateau would be able to fully reopen its doors remained uncertain. Norwood Police Department officials launched an investigation into the cause of the crash and were actively seeking surveillance video from the surrounding area to determine the factors that led to the vehicle striking the restaurant. The incident serves as a significant event in recent local history, highlighting the rapid and coordinated response of town emergency services during a major property accident in the heart of the Norwood business corridor.
