Well-Wishers Gather at Town Hall to Bid Farewell to John P. Mogan

A steady stream of colleagues, local officials, and residents filled Norwood Town Hall yesterday to shake the hand of retiring Town Manager John P. Mogan, who officially steps down from his post on Friday. Having announced his resignation in August after explaining that he had exhausted his “creative and innovative” abilities in the role, Mogan was visibly moved during the emotional send-off.

Surrounded by a gathering of present and former municipal employees, Mogan offered few formal remarks regarding his departure, simply stating: “I’m leaving a hell of a family here. These people here are my family, all of them.”

Town employees presented Mogan with two farewell gifts to mark the occasion: a new golf bag and a portable color television. (Captured alongside Mogan in a commemorative photograph by Larry Welsh were municipal staff members Bernie Cooper, Helen Joseph, Martha Buckley, and Inez Gallazzi.)

Praise from Town Officials and Future Plans

Reflecting on his tenure, Selectman Mary Fox shared warm praise for the outgoing administrator: “He was most helpful and most kind to me—a real gentleman. We’ll miss him very much.”

A Norwood native who previously served as town administrator in Walpole before taking the helm in Norwood, Mogan assured well-wishers that the reception was “not a wake,” adding, “I’ll be moving on.” While he has not yet targeted a specific position, Mogan indicated that he intends to remain active in the town management field.
