The Registry of Motor Vehicles (RMV) announced plans to reopen a branch in Norwood on a limited basis starting by the middle of next month.
Limited Road Testing Services to Resume
Initially, the reopened site will be dedicated exclusively to conducting driving tests for new drivers and individuals required to take road tests. Registry inspectors will travel from Quincy or Brockton to administer the examinations.
The previous Norwood Registry office closed on May 1 as one of 13 branches shuttered due to state budget cuts, forcing local residents to travel to Quincy, Brockton, or North Attleboro to renew licenses and registrations. Earlier attempts to prevent the closure—including an offer of free space by auto dealer Ernie Boch in one of his dealerships and discussions between Registrar Jerold A. Gnazzo and AutoMile dealers regarding rental funding for space in the town-owned civic center on Nahatan Street—had failed to yield agreements.
Positioning for Future Expansion
State Senator William Keating (D-Sharon), who advocated for the return of services, noted that while the initial reopening is restricted to road tests, it places Norwood in a strategic position for future expansion if the Registry scales up operations.
“It’s just good common sense that if we have something in place and expansion of services occurs, we’ll be in a good position,” Keating said. Pointing to widespread public outrage over long wait times and inadequate service across the state, Keating added, “It’s outrageous for people to pay the fees that they are and get second-rate treatment… I think that’s going to put pressure on the Registry to expand.”
William J. Donnelly, chief of staff for the registrar, confirmed the mid-next-month target, emphasizing that the limited site will serve as a convenience for motorists in the Norwood area.
