Voter Petition Campaign Seeks Ballot Challenge Against Proposed Guild School Civic Center
The petition drive for signatures to force a referendum vote on town meeting’s approval of the Guild School for a new civic recreation center is well underway, according to organizer John W. Hayes, District 2 town meeting representative.
As of last night, Hayes said he had 272 signatures, or about half the minimum believed required to put a question on the ballot on the town meeting action last week to develop a $2.2 million civic center at the former school.
His count did not include whatever signatures might be on petitions being circulated by more than 30 other people, Hayes said.
He’s hoping the petitions will carry 700 signatures of registered voters when submitted by the 5 p.m. deadline tomorrow, Hayes said, to allow for a number that might be disqualified by the registrars.
