Federal authorities utilized Norwood as the staging ground for a massive undercover drug sting that yielded the largest cocaine seizure in New England history, netting a staggering 4,822 pounds of cocaine valued at over $500 million.

According to a federal affidavit filed in U.S. District Court in Boston, alleged Colombian drug lord Marcos Garzon met undercover federal agents in Norwood on August 7 to hand over the two-ton cocaine cache, operating under the belief that agents would transport the drugs to a secure storage facility until buyers were secured. Investigators landed an aircraft at Norwood Airport that same day, utilizing the facility to facilitate the operation.

Following the drop, Garzon and his associates spent subsequent weeks traveling between Boston, Miami, and New York coordinating prospective buyers before federal agents moved in and arrested the suspects on Saturday in Wakefield as they returned to Massachusetts to collect a portion of the narcotics. Alongside the multi-ton cocaine haul, federal agents seized $623,000 in cash and cashier’s checks alongside five vehicles equipped with concealed drug compartments.

Local Police Remain Tight-Lipped

Norwood police officials maintained strict silence regarding the operation. Police spokesman Paul Bishop declined to disclose the exact drop location, the extent of local police involvement, or why Norwood was chosen, and initially refused to confirm the airport’s involvement—though airport Manager Thomas Maher independently verified that federal agents landed a plane at the facility on the day of the transfer. “We’re not going to discuss the airport, period,” Bishop stated, emphasizing that the ongoing investigation aims to apprehend at least one remaining fugitive and that premature disclosures could compromise undercover officer safety or jeopardize future arrests.

Law enforcement sources speculated that the suspects targeted Norwood due to its strategic proximity to major highways, its municipal airport, and the perception of a smaller suburban department. “They might have thought it was a small, two-cop town with an airport,” one source remarked of the town of 28,000 residents and its 63-officer police force.

Federal Arraignments

Ten defendants face federal prosecution, with nine appearing before U.S. Magistrate Judge Joyce London Alexander in Boston, where they were ordered held behind bars pending a Friday bail hearing. An extradition arrest was also processed in Florida.
