Racial Tensions and Spate of Teen Fights Prompt Safety Concerns in Norwood Following Assault
On July 24, 1989, the town of Norwood was grappling with a disturbing series of teenage altercations and racial tensions that left community members shaken and prompted local families to reevaluate their safety.
The unrest came to a head when an 18-year-old white resident allegedly shouted racial slurs and physically assaulted a Black teenager outside the Broadway McDonald’s restaurant on Tuesday, July 18, 1989. The teen was arrested and charged with a civil rights violation, with his case continued to August 21, 1989. The victim’s father, speaking anonymously after a decade of peaceful residency in Norwood following their move from Boston, described the profound toll the attack took on his 17-year-old son—who suffered headaches and nausea—and admitted it forced the family to reconsider calling the predominantly white suburb home, where just 128 of the town’s 29,000 residents identified as Black according to the 1985 census.
The violent encounter was far from an isolated incident. Police Spokesman Paul Bishop confirmed that law enforcement had responded to a wave of seven youth-related clashes since mid-June. Tensions initially flared on June 14, 1989, when a dispute at Norwood High School involving an 18-year-old Black teen from Roslindale, escalated over subsequent weeks into broader neighborhood confrontations involving mixed groups of teenagers. What began as verbal harassment quickly intensified, with youths introducing weapons such as clubs and baseball bats into the mix. On July 12, responding officers recovered two crude clubs—one outfitted with a taped-on knife—on Bahama Drive. While police stepped up patrols and monitored the escalating feud, authorities acknowledged the persistent volatility of the situation. Reflecting the community’s anxious mood, the victim’s father vowed to monitor the upcoming court proceedings closely, stating, “We intend to watch the court proceedings carefully, to make sure no one drops the ball.“
