Word Comes Six Days After Report That He Was Missing
A most welcome letter was received at the Thornton home on Railroad Avenue on Wednesday morning, a letter that brought the cheering news that Private Thornton, 21, who had been previously reported as missing in the Italian sector and later was said to be a prisoner of the Germans had escaped his captors and was well inside his own lines.
The letter was sent to his mother, Mrs. Martin Thornton of 373 Railroad Avenue and came as an answer to her prayers that her son be spared and that she would hear that he was well.
The letter arrived just six days after the Thornton family received notification from the War Department that Private Thornton was missing in Italy. On the day that the War Department telegram arrived, Mrs. Thornton had also received a letter from her son in which he stated that he was well.
