Pop Warner Football Season Canceled Due to Low Enrollment-August 28, 1985

League President Timothy Fruci announced that despite starting registration in April—earlier than in previous years—only 55 players signed up, falling well short of the roughly 80 players needed to field a viable season.

The league typically organizes participants aged 8 to 15 into four age- and weight-classified teams that compete across the region in the Bay State League. In addition to the players, the cancellation impacts roughly 50 girls who had registered to participate as cheerleaders.

Shift Toward Soccer and Safety Concerns

Fruci attributed the decline in football participation to a shrinking pool of eligible youths, growing safety concerns among parents wary of contact sports, and a surging local interest in soccer. Addressing the injury concerns, Fruci emphasized that youth football maintains a strong safety record, stating, “We’ve never had a serious injury in Pop Warner Football.”

Having led the league for a year and a half after taking over the reins from his father, Norwood police officer Domenic Fruci, the 23-year-old league president expressed hope that the program can be revived in future years. He stressed that Pop Warner plays a critical foundational role in preparing athletes for junior high and high school squads by teaching fundamentals, discipline, and physical fitness.
