A brief disturbance occurred at the Father MacAleer swimming pool on Vernon Street when Norwood Police were called to remove a group of youths who had entered the facility after it had been closed for the day.
Recreation Director Robert Ivatts explained that the pool had been shut down due to thunder showers in accordance with state law requiring public pools to close during such weather conditions. The lifeguard remained on duty until 4:45 p.m., after which the pool gate lock was broken and unauthorized entry was gained.
Police responded to clear the area, and the Department of Public Works later secured the lock. The incident highlighted the challenges of enforcing weather-related closures and maintaining safety at public recreation facilities. The brief episode also underscored the importance of compliance with state regulations designed to protect swimmers during hazardous conditions.
