John J. Carroll first confirmed last Wednesday that a specialized police internal investigation team had launched a formal inquiry into the incident, though he initially declined to discuss specific operational details of the probe.
According to knowledgeable sources familiar with the matter, the internal investigation centers on allegations that a police officer removed a bicycle—or parts of it—from the station house, mistakenly believing that the property was no longer needed as evidence in an active investigation. Reportedly, upon learning that the criminal case involving the bicycle was actually still ongoing, the officer attempted to quietly return the item to the station, triggering the internal review.
Town officials emphasized that accountability and transparency remain top priorities within the department as the final report is compiled. The conclusion of the internal probe, expected within the coming days, is anticipated to resolve the unusual stationhouse incident and provide definitive answers regarding department protocol.
