The Board of Selectmen last night appointed Patrolman Patrick J. Coyne to the rank of sergeant in the Norwood Police Department, recognizing his long service and civic involvement.

Sgt. Coyne joined the department on June 1, 1920, and is a World War I Navy veteran, having served aboard the U.S.S. Illinois. He is a past commander of Norwood Post, American Legion, and a member of both the Knights of Columbus and the Veterans of Foreign Wars. Coyne resides on Hawthorne Road with his wife and four children.

The Selectmen also named Special Officers Thomas H. McNulty and William Jankowski as permanent members of the force. Both men live on Prospect Avenue and have served as special officers for five years.

McNulty was previously captain of one of Norwood High’s most successful football teams, later continuing his athletic career at Dean Academy, where he played under coach Dan Sullivan.

The appointments reflect Norwood’s commitment to recognizing dedicated public service and strengthening its police force with experienced personnel.
