In a testament to their resilience and determination, Pete Wall’s Norwood team staged a remarkable comeback against Westwood in Zone 6A American Legion baseball at Balch Field last night.
The game marked a crucial turning point for Norwood, who were initially behind 3-0 before storming back on the exceptional pitching and hitting of Brian Adams.
Adams, who had just recovered from a bout with the flu, provided the spark Norwood desperately needed. After two were out in the bottom of the fourth inning, Adams delivered a pivotal hit that scored Norwood’s first two runs. This offensive explosion cut Westwood’s lead to 3-2 and ignited a seven-run rally in that same inning, a surge that would ultimately seal their 10-3 victory. Following the contest, a relieved and impressed Pete Wall praised his star player: “Adams’ was the big hit and he came out of a sick bed to do it.”
The comeback marked a significant shift in momentum for a Norwood squad that had struggled with consistency, notably leaving 14 men on base in their previous outing against Medfield. Having finally secured the timely hitting they lacked in earlier contests, the team demonstrated the high-level focus required for postseason contention. Westwood Coach Tom McElroy, visibly frustrated by his team’s performance, offered a stark assessment of their situation: “The way we’ve been playing, we don’t deserve to make the playoffs.”
Despite their recent struggles, McElroy remained cautiously optimistic about Westwood’s future prospects. He cited the fact that eight teams in their division still held a mathematical shot at securing a playoff berth. As the league race tightened, the victory cemented Norwood’s standing among the Zone 6A front runners, joining Walpole, Dedham, and Medfield as the squads to watch as the regular season approached its final stretch. For Norwood, the victory was more than just a win; it was a clear statement that they possessed the character required for a deep playoff run.
