Stylish Dick Hebner and classy Bob Donahue Scored two goals apiece while Hading Norwood to a convincing 6-0 victory over Lynnfield in a State Hockey Tournament game last night before 1500 fans at the Boston Arena.
The outcome of the game over-shadowed a fine performance by Lynnfield goalie Dan Scioletti, who turned’ aside 29 shots and spared the Pioneers further embarrassment with his ‘jumping jack’ saves.
Norwood was really up for this one and the 1965 runners-up didn’t take long to let the tact be known as they swooped into Lynnfield territory with the opening faceoff and vacated it only briefly during the remainder of the game.
It was this same Norwood sextet which dropped a 1-0 decision to Walpole in the finals of the State Tournament last season, but coach Don Wheeler feels he has the horses to go all the way this year.
Norwood, Bay State League champions who boast a 15-game undefeated streak, displayed a fine passing and puck-control against Lynnfield.
In the first period Hebner, who won the individual scoring title in the Bay State League with 29 goals and 16 assists, showed why he deserves the crown. Norwood put the pressure on goalie Scioletti for the first three minutes of the period, put Dan managed to turn aside everything coming at him.
At 4:36 of the first, defenseman Jack Cronin rifled a low slap-shot from the point which Scioletti blocked, but the rebound went out to Rebner to the left of the net and Dick slammed H home for the first score.
In the opening 10 minutes, Scioletti came up with 11 saves to just one for Norwood goalie Neil Higgins.
Norwood exploded for three goals in the middle stanza. The first came at 2:10 as Hebner tipped in another shot from in front of the Lynnfield crease after Scioletti had made rapid-fire saves on Bob Donahue and Pete Oberländer.
At 3:42, Dick Graham gave Norwood its third goal of the game as he took a pass from Oberländer to the left of the Pioneer goal and let go with what looked to be a pass to Hebner. But the puck hit Sciolettr’s pads and bounced into the nets.
Less than a minute later, Norwood racked up its fourth goal. Donahue was set up to the right of the Lynnfield net on a nifty pass by Hebner. Bob let go a high lob which sailed over Scioletti’s shoulder and into the upper-left corner of the net.
Norwood added two more in the final period within a 36-second span. Donahue found the range at 4:54 fit gave his team a 5-0 1 lead, then Bill Hasenfus added the final tally at the 5:30 mark.
Norwood will take on the winner of the Lynn Classical-Auburn game (being played tonight) next Monday at the Boston Arena.
