The Norwood Senior Bowling League has been a staple in the community for decades, providing seniors with a fun and relaxing way to stay active. The league meets every Thursday at the Norwood Sports Center, located on Cottage Street East.
According to Dorothy Vitale, Executive Director of the Senior Center, the league has been around for a very long time. Arthur Gearty, an employee at the Norwood Sports Center, confirmed that the league dates back to 1991, possibly even before that. The league was initially run by Walter Molander, who kept the averages, schedules, and ensured everyone’s happiness.
The league is beloved by its members, with many noting it’s about having fun, not keeping score or playing for money. Barbara Tetrault said, It’s a lot of fun. It’s a great game, and we have a great time. The camaraderie down here is excellent. The group meets every Thursday at 9:30 a.m., and seniors can rent shoes and bowl three sets with the group for just $6.
The league welcomes all seniors, regardless of their bowling skills. Sandy Germano said, You don’t have to be a good bowler. It is just people enjoying each other and getting some exercise… it’s not for prize money, it’s just for enjoyment. The league also attracts members from surrounding communities, including Canton and Dedham.
The Norwood Senior Bowling League offers a unique opportunity for seniors to socialize, exercise, and have fun. As Marion Connelly said, We would love anybody interested to come and join, because we do need new bowlers. It’s fun and relaxing. The league continues to thrive, with sixty-three bowlers participating in the Spring 2011 season, cementing its place as a cherished weekly tradition for local older adults.
