Students across Norwood public schools have demonstrated exceptional academic performance, scoring remarkably well on state-mandated basic-skills tests for the second consecutive year. Released recently following examinations administered last spring, the district data reveals that only a very small handful of students across grades three, five, and eight failed to achieve minimum passing standards in reading, mathematics, and writing.
State-Mandated Basic-Skills Testing Program
The standardized examinations are administered under a statewide program instituted by the Massachusetts Department of Education designed to evaluate and enhance fundamental academic competencies across public school districts. Under state guidelines, students who fail to meet established minimum passing thresholds are provided with targeted special attention and remediation from classroom teachers to help them master core subjects.
Detailed Grade-Level Test Results
District administrators released the comprehensive breakdown of student scores across all tested grade levels and academic disciplines:
- Reading Examinations:
- Grade Three: 215 students (99 percent) passed, while 3 students (1 percent) failed.
- Grade Five: 297 students (99.7 percent) passed, while 1 student (0.3 percent) failed.
- Grade Eight: 372 students (98 percent) passed, while 9 students (2 percent) failed.
- Mathematics Examinations:
- Grade Three: 199 students (92 percent) passed, while 18 students (8 percent) failed.
- Grade Five: 285 students (95 percent) passed, while 15 students (5 percent) failed.
- Grade Eight: 374 students (98 percent) passed, while 7 students (2 percent) failed.
- Writing Examinations:
- Grade Three: 219 students (99 percent) passed, while 3 students (1 percent) failed.
