The sun had set over the lush green grass of Adams Field in Quincy, casting a warm orange glow over the American Legion baseball District 6 playoff opener between Norwood Post 70 and Quincy Morrisette Post 294.
The air was electric with anticipation as the two teams took to the field, each determined to emerge victorious. For Norwood’s Sean Mellen, this game would be one for the ages.
As the starter for Norwood, Mellen had been cruising through the first 6.2 innings of the game, allowing only two runs on four hits while striking out seven and walking nine. His team was leading Quincy by a score of 4-2, with the bases loaded and two outs in the top of the eighth inning. The pressure was mounting, but Mellen remained focused, drawing from his vast experience as a seasoned player.
“I was just trying to do the same thing I had done the first seven innings,” Mellen said in an interview after the game. “Just trying to throw a strike.” His words were laced with determination and confidence, a testament to his unwavering commitment to his craft. As he stood on the mound, gazing out at the Quincy batters, Mellen’s mind was clear and focused.
The next few minutes would prove to be some of the most intense in the game. With three straight hitters walking to load the bases, Mellen found himself facing a full count against Quincy’s Nick Valencenti with the winning run already on base. The tension was palpable as Mellen took a deep breath and delivered.
When Valencenti swung and missed, the senior exhaled, and was mobbed by his teammates, as Norwood Post 70 earned a nail-biting, 4-2 victory over Quincy at Adams Field. The scene that unfolded was one of pure elation, with Mellen’s teammates rushing to congratulate him on an incredible performance.
“I wasn’t really worried,” Mellen said, reflecting on the moment. “The worst thing that could’ve happened was I walk him in, and it’s 4-3 and you have to worry about the new hitter.” His words were a testament to his composure under pressure, a quality that has served him well throughout his baseball career.
Mellen’s complete game performance was nothing short of remarkable. He allowed two runs on four hits while striking out seven and walking nine, a true display of his skill and endurance. Despite walking a lot of hitters, Mellen was able to escape nearly every jam, including the final and most crucial.
Jake O’Rourke led the way offensively for Norwood, going 3 for 4 with two RBI. Although Morrisette didn’t explode offensively, the team still had chances in addition to the final inning. Andrew Jaehnig led the way, going 1 for 4 with an RBI while also drawing a walk in the seventh to start the drama.
Greg Paulo got the start for Quincy, going 4.2 innings, giving up four runs on six hits, and striking out six. The team managed to pick up runs in the third and fourth innings, but could not sustain a rally after falling behind 3-0 early. “That’s a great club over there,” Norwood coach Paul Samargedlis said of Morrisette. “Steve Maze is a great coach.
You don’t just go out there and beat them by showing up. You got to have something special, and it’s this guy (Mellen).” With the win, Norwood has a bit of leeway, as the team will have a few more games added to its tournament schedule. Morrisette plays again Saturday night, and will look to keep its season alive playing in an elimination game.
Mellen, who committed to Northeastern University this past week, did not hide his excitement for what’s to come in the tournament. “Whoever we get, it should be a good game,” he said with a smile. “We’re looking forward to it.” As the sun dipped below the horizon, casting Adams Field in a warm golden light, Mellen and his teammates celebrated their hard-fought victory.
Their bond was strengthened by this moment of triumph, forged in the fire of competition and tempered by the shared experience of overcoming adversity together. As they walked off the field, arms around each other’s shoulders, it was clear that Norwood Post 70 had truly earned its place among the top teams in District 6.
