Facing declining patient volumes, a drop in revenues, and mounting unpaid bills, Norwood Hospital has laid off approximately 35 employees over the past three weeks as part of a severe cost-cutting initiative. The layoffs include 11 registered nurses, along with staff from the engineering department, volunteer services administration, and food services.
Public relations director Robert Johnson stated that while the hospital initially announced plans last month to lay off 50 workers and eliminate another 50 positions through attrition, the majority of the reduction targets were ultimately met by eliminating existing vacant positions. Furthermore, some of the 35 employees who were originally let go have already been rehired into roles left vacant by staff resignations. “Given what we know now, we’re all set for the next fiscal year,” Johnson said, adding that no further layoffs are anticipated at the 245-bed facility, which employs about 1,100 people.
Root Causes of the Financial Crunch
The hospital’s fiscal crisis came to a head on July 30, driven by what administrators described as an acute cash flow crunch. Hospital officials pointed to several compounding financial pressures:
- Approximately 80,000 former patients owed a combined total of more than $5 million in unpaid medical bills.
- Significant delays and difficulties in securing reimbursement payments from various insurance organizations.
- Anticipated long-term decreases in inpatient stays and patient population levels.
Comprehensive Budget Reductions and Service Rollbacks
To bridge an overall budget deficit ranging between $2 million and $3 million, the hospital implemented a sweeping series of austerity measures alongside the staff reductions. A 28-bed medical-surgery wing was temporarily shut down, a strict six-month building moratorium was placed on all capital expansion and facility improvement projects, and equipment purchases were capped at $500,000.
Hospital leadership credited these swift, aggressive interventions with stabilizing the institution’s immediate financial standing. “When the dust settled, we reached our goals,” Johnson said. “The acute cash flow crunch has passed.”
