When classes resume next week, high school teachers across Norwood will officially be “going by the book.” Superintendent of Schools James Savage informed the school committee that faculty members teaching every course—from woodshop to algebra—will be required to follow newly established, standardized curriculum guides authored by Norwood educators.
Closing the Gap in District Education
The comprehensive guides dictate core instructional requirements, mandatory course materials, and standardized testing protocols for every subject.
“We will not tolerate individual curriculums,” Superintendent Savage told the committee. “We have to have a school system curriculum in place. These guides will be closing a wide gap that had existed.”
Assistant Superintendent Ralph Toran emphasized that the new mandates are designed to ensure consistency while preserving professional autonomy. “These are just guides, meant to show a way to conduct a class, but teachers are free to be creative so long as they cover the material,” Toran explained. “There was an incredible readiness from the teachers to design these guides.”
Development and Implementation Timeline
The initiative is the culmination of extensive collaborative work:
- High School Guides: Developed collectively by high school teachers and administrators starting the previous summer.
- Junior High Guides: Begun by junior high educators over the summer months.
- Elementary Guides: Scheduled to be drafted by elementary teachers beginning next year.
School committee member Richard Kief urged rigorous oversight, suggesting that department heads actively monitor lesson plans and test results to ensure the materials are faithfully utilized. “We want to make sure these things don’t just sit on a shelf now after all the work, research and effort that’s gone into them,” Kief noted. Toran added that midterm and final exams are already monitored to catch any systemic student comprehension issues.
To ensure complete public transparency, all completed curriculum guides will be made available for public review at the Morrill Memorial Public Library starting next month.
