In the sweltering summer of 1971, the town of Norwood was abuzz with excitement as its American Legion baseball team prepared to face off against their arch-rivals, Wellesley.

The stage was set for a thrilling matchup that would determine not only the outcome of the game but also the fate of Norwood’s season-long quest for victory.

For three long years, Norwood had been searching for a win over Wellesley, either in American Legion or high school play. The drought had become a source of frustration and motivation for the team, driving them to work tirelessly towards their goal. As they took to the field on that fateful evening, the weight of history hung heavy in the air.

The game itself was a closely contested affair, with both teams displaying impressive skill and determination. Norwood’s pitcher, Dave Joy, proved to be a force to be reckoned with, striking out the side in the second inning and dominating the hitters throughout the game. However, Wellesley’s Pete Brooks refused to back down, matching Joy pitch for pitch and keeping his team in contention.

The first run of the game belonged to Norwood, courtesy of a well-placed single by John Lynch in the second inning. Ed Hickey followed up with a triple, scoring Lynch and giving Norwood an early lead. However, Wellesley refused to give up, and the game remained neck and neck until the fifth inning.

It was in this pivotal moment that Joy’s fortunes began to change. After issuing his first walk of the game to Greg Garritt, Joy found himself in trouble as Garritt stole second base and moved into position to score. A subsequent walk to Steve Scannell put two runners on base, but Joy managed to escape the jam by striking out Brooks and securing a crucial double play.

The deciding run was scored by Norwood in the bottom of the fifth inning when Joy’s throw to second base was dropped, allowing him to reach third base safely. Joe Porcello then singled, scoring Joy and giving Norwood a 2-1 lead that they would not relinquish.

As the final whistle blew, the Norwood team erupted into cheers, their three-year quest for victory finally over. Coach Frank Wall beamed with pride as he praised his team’s determination and skill, saying, “The boys really wanted this one. They were out on the field taking fungo practice yesterday afternoon in the pouring rain because they wanted to be ready.”

Joy’s impressive performance was matched by his teammates, who provided him with crucial support throughout the game. As Wall noted, “I think we only made one error and we needed the hitting we got.” The Norwood team’s late-season surge had been fueled by their improved hitting, particularly the contributions of Joe Porcello, who had been hitting like a madman in recent games.

As the season drew to a close, Wellesley found themselves tied for second place with Walpole at 12-5. Meanwhile, Norwood sat proudly in fourth place with an impressive 11-6 record. The team’s next challenge would come in the form of a matchup against Dedham, but they were ready for whatever lay ahead.
