Wenstrom and Mustangs Stifle Rockets
The Norwood High School football team put on a masterclass in all-phases dominance on a crisp autumn Saturday, defeating Needham 24-0 to improve their stellar record to 5-0. With the shutout victory, the Mustangs captured a coveted tie for first place in the Bay State League standings alongside Natick.
The tone was set early by junior Ken Wenstrom, whose explosive playmaking added a devastating breakaway threat to the Norwood backfield. With 4:12 remaining in the first half, Wenstrom took a handoff, bounced left, and cut sharply upfield for a 48-yard touchdown run. The electrifying score put the icing on an already great-tasting cake, extending Norwood’s lead to 24-0 and capping off his second touchdown run of the afternoon.
Stifling Defense and First-Half Fireworks
While the offense clicked on all cylinders, the Norwood defense put on a suffocating display. Anchored by tackles Jim Landry and Chris House, alongside end George Morrice—who tallied two crucial sacks and an interception—the Mustangs completely stymied Needham (1-4) in the opening half, holding the Rockets to a meager 27 total yards of offense.
“They were bigger, stronger and faster,” admitted Needham coach Roy Johan after the game. “We were trying to establish a running game, but that ended quick enough. They beat us in every phase of the game.”
In stark contrast, Norwood’s offense moved the ball at will, racking up 230 yards—140 on the ground and 90 through the air—in the first half alone. Following a methodical 80-yard march on their second possession, which culminated in a 30-yard scoring dash by Wenstrom, special teams delivered next. Needham punted back to the Mustangs, and quarterback-slash-return man Robert Conti fielded the kick at his own 17-yard line before slicing through coverage for an 83-yard punt return touchdown.
Early in the second period, Conti connected through the air, finding Kevin Weber for a 13-yard touchdown pass. The score was set up by relentless defensive pressure when Chris House sacked Needham quarterback Andy Effenson on a third-and-nine situation, forcing a short punt that set the table for Wenstrom’s 48-yard house call shortly thereafter.
Managing the Lead and Looking Ahead
With a commanding 24-0 advantage safely secured by halftime, Norwood coach Wayne Simarrian opted to rest most of his starters for the final two quarters. Junior Tim Drummey stepped in under center to manage quarterbacking duties, executing several heads-up scrambles to elude Needham defenders and chew up clock through a scoreless second half.
Praising his young standout, Coach Simarrian reflected on Wenstrom’s rapid ascent from the previous year’s sophomore squad. “He’s a junior who’s been really coming around,” Simarrian noted. “He’s up from last year’s sophomore team and broke a lot of carries, but Saturday was the best day of his career.”
