The Norwood Catholic Woman’s Club opened its 1965-1966 season in St. Catherine’s Auditorium on Wednesday, Oct. 13.
This first meeting gave members a chance to greet each other, to meet the new members and to become acquainted with the club activities planned for the new club season.
The meeting was opened by the president, Mrs. Ed-ward J. Martin, and the prayer was led by Fr. Francis Hardiman. Mrs. Martin requested that the opening prayer be dedicated to two recently deceased members of the club, Miss Josephine Scannell, and Mrs. John Crimmins, a past officer, whose untimely death was announced at the meeting.
Following the pledge to the flag, a welcome was extended to the new members who were later introduced by Membership Chairman, Mrs. Francis X. Ahearn. The Secretary’s report was read as was correspondence from the Spiritual Director, Monsignor Robert Sennott, who is presently attending the Council in Rome.
Following the treasurer’s report, Mrs. Martin presented the board members, who in turn told of the plans of their committees for the following year.
Ways and Means Chairman Mrs. George McDonald announced a special Holiday Eve dinner dance,” “A Night For The Pops,” will be held on Wednesday, November 10, at the Bell House in Sharon. Reservations for this annual dinner dance were taken at the close of the meeting by the chairman, Mrs. John Sullivan.
After the business meeting, Program Chairman M r s. Francis X. Ahearn introduced the featured attraction of the evening—selections from the musical theatre entitled “Like Being in Love,” co-starring Robbl Curtis and Joe Harrington. With examples from the earlier romantic composers, the slow and dreamy songs, to the more serious selections of modern composers, the happy and breezy songs, Miss Curtis and Mr. Harrington provided a ring-side seat to America’s own art form, a unique force in the musical theatre, in which there is an integrating of song, acting and lyric.
From the first strains of “Oh Promise Me” from Robin Hood, to the more familiar selections from West Side Story, a wide variety of delightful musical selections were presented, accompanied by a sparkling performance of dancing and narrative.
Following the meeting, delicious refreshments were served from tables decorated with an autumn theme by the hospitality chairman, Mrs. Thomas McAuliffe, and her hostess of the evening, Mrs. Robert Yancey.
Assisting as hostesses were Mrs. Francis X. DeBenedictus, Mrs. Salatore Gulinello, Mrs. James H. O’Brien, Mrs. John C. Hegarty, Mrs. John Bacon, Mrs. Thomas J. Connolly, Mrs. Thomas A. Couch, Mrs. Joseph F. Comerford, Mrs. Joseph Lang, and Mrs. Thomas De Sisto.
On Saturday, October 16, an afternoon for the children was held as over 300 youngsters enjoyed a program of magic, balloon sculpture and participation fun. Mrs. Donald Lynch, assisted by Mrs, Fred Trainor, arranged this successful program. Also present were the officers of the club, The Ways and Means Chairman, Mrs. George McDonald, Mrs. Thomas Judge, Mrs. Francis Fried man, Mrs. Norman Greene.
