Thomas G. Redmayne, son of Captain and Mrs. Richard B. Redmayne, 3 Harrow Road, Norwood, was recently sworn into the U.S. Naval Reserve as a member of Submarine Reserve Division 1-8, Boston. Captain Redmayne, Commanding Officer of the USS Salamonie (AO-26), administered the Oath of Allegiance to his son.

Seaman Recruit Redmayne’s enlistment is for a period of six years, two years of which will be served on active duty in the U. S. Navy. One weekend per month during the remaining four years of his enlistment he will attend classics and practical drills in Boston’s Navy Building and on board Submarine Reserve Division 1-8’s training submarine USS Billfish (SS 286). In addition, he will spend two weeks each summer at sea aboard a submarine operating out of the U. S. Naval Submarine Base, New London, Conn.

Several four-year college programs which lead to a naval officer’s commission are available to qualified Naval Reservists. Including attendance at the U.S. Naval Academy or at one of the 52 U. S. colleges participating In the Naval Reserve Officer Training Corps Program.

Two other Norwood residents are also members of Submarine Reserve Division 1-8. Richard J. Laulor, lieutenant commander, U.S.N.R., of 16 Greenwich Road, is the division’s training officer, and Robert B. Souden, quartermaster third class, U.S.N.R., 453 Winter Street, is in the Navigation Department.

Souden has just recently rejoined SubDiv 1-8 after serving aboard the Atlantic Fleet submarine U S.S. Irex (SS 482) for over two years.
