On July 21, 1967, the Norwood Arena officially marked a significant milestone in local motorsports history with the unveiling of a new $200,000 drag strip. Track President Wes Plummer presided over the debut of the facility, which was billed as the Norwood Drags. Operating as an independent, non-sanctioned “fun strip,” the venue was designed to serve as a regional hub for speed enthusiasts. The inaugural event featured competition across four distinct divisions of vehicles, with rules carefully aligned with standards maintained by the National Hot Rod Association (NHRA) and the NASCAR Drag Division. This adherence to established guidelines ensured that the racing would be both competitive and orderly, attracting skilled drivers eager to test their machines on the new quarter-mile track.
The inaugural competition featured a structured classification system to ensure equitable racing among varying vehicle types. The first division, classified as NHRA Pure Stock or NASCAR Factory Stock, was strictly reserved for 100% factory-stock vehicles driven on the street, requiring them to be free of any modifications. This category allowed local enthusiasts to showcase the performance of standard production cars in their original configurations. The second division, comprising NHRA Stock Cars or NASCAR Stock Cars, included American factory production models alongside select domestic and foreign sports cars, permitting minor modifications within strict governing body guidelines. The third division, known as NHRA Stock Sports Car or NASCAR Stock Sports Car, focused exclusively on factory production sports cars and stock import vehicles, emphasizing the inherent agility and high-performance engineering of these specialized machines.
To provide participants and spectators with reliable data, the facility was equipped with a state-of-the-art Chrondek timing system paired with an electric dual-lane timer. This technology guaranteed that every run down the track was precisely measured, providing accurate elapsed times for every competitor. As the Norwood Arena opened its gates to the public, the atmosphere was defined by high anticipation and the raw sound of high-performance engines. For the residents of Norwood, the debut of the Norwood Drags represented a major expansion of local entertainment options, transforming the Norwood Arena into a premier destination for those captivated by the thrill of high-speed drag racing. The event successfully established a new standard for local motorsports, promising a future of adrenaline-filled competition on the track.
