Following a meeting of principal stockholders on Friday, the Norwood Arena Corp.—the corporate entity holding title to 74 acres of land along Route 1 at the site of the former stock car track—has undergone a major leadership reorganization after operating without a full board of directors for approximately two years.
New Corporate Officers Elected
Stockholders elected and installed a new slate of executive officers to steer the long-dormant property’s commercial future:
- President: William F. Butters of Nichols Street (former state representative and selectman since 1971, whose family has held stock in the corporation since its founding in the 1940s).
- Vice President: Mark Goodman of Randolph, an attorney.
- Assistant Treasurer: Selectman William Anderson (owner of Herb Anderson Volkswagen of Norwood).
- Treasurer: Alan G. Zuker of Brookline (continuing in his financial role).
- Clerk: John W. Peterson of Stoughton (continuing in his administrative role).
The corporate restructuring comes less than a week after representatives submitted a preliminary master plan to develop the 74-acre parcel into an industrial and commercial park. The property has remained largely dormant since a controversial proposal to rezone the acreage for residential apartment units was decisively rejected at a town meeting two years prior. The land currently remains zoned for business use.
Management Shifts and Real Estate Strategy
Alan G. Zuker, who personally owns approximately 200 acres of land directly adjacent to the arena corporation’s property, has managed the corporation’s day-to-day affairs since the 1973 rezoning battle. However, John Peterson clarified that Zuker does not hold a controlling majority of corporate stock. Shares had been placed under Zuker’s temporary stewardship “to see if he could do something with it.”
Peterson noted that the formal reorganization was prompted by operational necessity: “I didn’t like the idea of it [the corporation] being so unwieldy. Now we can do business.”
Regarding development oversight, William Butters noted that while Needham real estate firm Algonquin Properties, Inc. has managed project plans over the past four months, the firm’s exclusive rights have now terminated, opening the door for other agencies to participate in marketing and development.
Addressing potential questions regarding his public office, Butters stated he does not foresee any conflict-of-interest situations stemming from his position on the Board of Selectmen, but affirmed that he will formally abstain from any town votes involving the arena property.
