Norwood American Legion Dominates Westwood
On July 11, 1990, the Norwood American Legion baseball team emphatically dispelled any concerns regarding their late-season momentum by defeating Westwood with a commanding 14–3 victory.

Entering the game after a recent, surprising doubleheader sweep by their neighboring rivals, Norwood (19–4) arrived at the field in Westwood with a clear mandate: keep their hopes for the best record in Zone 10 alive.

The visitors wasted no time asserting dominance. Westwood (15–6), already reeling after their ace pitcher Jeff Mann was sidelined by a recent car accident, turned to Jamie White for his first pitching appearance since April. Norwood immediately capitalized on the opportunity, using a massive seven-run outburst in the second inning to secure an 8–0 lead. The rally was fueled by a bases-clearing double from Tom O’Leary, followed by an aggressive offensive display that culminated in a towering three-run home run hit by Bill Jacobs that soared deep into the left-field woods.

On the mound, Norwood southpaw Joe Montesano delivered a steady performance, pitching five innings and surrendering only one run on six hits. Brian Wayland closed out the final two frames to seal the win. Despite Westwood’s late-game efforts, including a two-run double by J.C. Minko in the seventh, the outcome was never in doubt. Norwood coach Pete Wall praised the team’s ability to capitalize early, noting that while the margin of victory was substantial, the focus remained on the importance of securing the win.
