Entering tonight’s high-stakes state championship matchup against Aldenville at Sargent Field in New Bedford, the Norwood American Legion baseball team boasts an extraordinary 30-1 record.
When asked what the showdown signifies, Norwood coach Pete Wall offered a characteristically grounded perspective:
“If we win, we’ll be 31-1.” While mathematically accurate, a victory carries much heavier weight, securing Norwood its second consecutive state championship crown alongside an automatic berth in the Northeast Regional Tournament, scheduled for August 20 through 24 at the same New Bedford venue.
To claim the title, Aldenville advanced by defeating West Boylston 6-1, but now faces the daunting task of beating Norwood twice in the double-elimination series starting tonight at 7:30. If Aldenville manages to pull off a win, a decisive final game will follow tomorrow night at 7:30. Coach Wall remains supremely confident in his roster, stating, “We’ve only lost one game this season, and if we’re going to lose, they’ll have to beat us twice.”
To secure the trophy, Norwood will hand the ball to starting pitcher Jim McCready, who carries an unblemished 6-0 record into the contest, hoping to match the explosive offensive momentum from the previous weekend where the squad racked up 24 total hits in dominant 8-2 and 11-0 victories. Wall admitted that the historic scope of a 30-1 season has yet to fully sink in amid the daily grind. “You just keep playing ball,” Wall remarked. “There was a time in the season where we were making up rainouts and we played seven games in three days. You don’t have time to think about much during the season.”
The veteran coach will undoubtedly find time to reflect once the dust settles, particularly with potential aspirations stretching all the way to South Dakota for the National Legion Tournament. Bolstered by a strong core of returning players from the previous year’s state championship squad—which finished with a stellar 35-6 record and a 1-2 showing at regionals—Norwood enters the diamond with unmatched confidence. “We have a lot of depth,” Wall concluded. “We’ve been winning all year; I don’t see any reason to stop now.”
