Construction on the nearly $600,000 addition to the Norwood Post Office at Guild and Linden streets has reached the halfway mark, with first-floor concrete poured and bricklayers currently raising exterior walls.
Project Scope and Modern Features
Assistant Postmaster John W. Murphy announced that the project—which includes minor reconstruction along Guild Street that began last April—is slated for completion around mid-March. The comprehensive expansion and remodeling effort will result in the consolidation of local postal operations, most notably the eventual closure of the South Norwood Branch Post Office, shifting parcel post and branch functions entirely to the main municipal facility.
The upgraded facility incorporates several modern engineering and architectural features designed to improve efficiency and public service:
- 24-Hour Lobby Access: The new public lobby will be divided by glass doors, allowing one section to remain open 24 hours a day for box holders, while the other half locks during non-business hours.
- Heated Truck Ramp: A raised loading ramp features in-wall electric heaters designed to hook up directly to parked mail truck engines, keeping vehicles sufficiently warmed in cold weather and eliminating the need for indoor garaging.
- Sorting and Receiving Upgrades: The interior expands floor space to house a new delivery section, an advanced mail and parcel post sorting area, and a large back loading platform on the Linden Street side equipped with new scale and forklift installations.
- Customer Service and Administrative Enhancements: Customer service windows will be redesigned to mirror modern bank teller windows, department heads will move into new private offices, and a new ladies’ lavatory and lounge will be added.
Renovations will also extend to the older section of the existing post office building, which is scheduled for a comprehensive interior facelift alongside the new construction.
