The possibility of expanding New Norwood Hospital has been a topic of discussion among town officials and hospital administrators for some time now. As reported in The Patriot Ledger on July 15, 1976, the hospital’s administrator, David Buchmueller, met with town officials to discuss the potential expansion of the hospital.
According to Mr. Buchmueller, the hospital is considering building an addition on the nearby Civic Recreation Center site. This plan would allow the hospital to expand its facilities and provide better services to the community. However, this plan also comes with a significant cost, estimated to be over $10 million.
The hospital’s trustees are concerned about the financial implications of expanding the hospital. They have informally decided on a ceiling for new rates to meet expansion costs, but they have not voted on the matter yet. The state has much to say on rates, and the hospital must fall back on its own financial resourcefulness to make payment on a bank loan.
The hospital’s comprehensive health planning committee, which includes hospital trustees, medical staff members, and corporation members, is working on a report that will eventually be submitted to the state for a certificate of need. This certificate is required before any major expansion of facilities can take place.
Mr. Buchmueller emphasized that the hospital’s “fund-raising potential” should be explored before jumping to conclusions about the financial feasibility of expanding the hospital. The hospital plans to solicit comments and support from the community on this issue.
The decision-making process for the proposed expansion is rapidly accelerating, with input coming from selectmen, state representatives, and senators. The hospital’s administrators are working closely with town officials to ensure that any expansion plans meet the needs of the community.
In related news, New England Telephone Co. has announced its willingness to help fund a “911” emergency telephone system in Needham if the town decides to accept such a service. This system would provide a more efficient way for emergency services to be dispatched and would improve response times.
The hospital’s expansion plans are just one of several initiatives aimed at improving healthcare services in the area. As the community continues to grow, it is essential that healthcare facilities keep pace with these changes.
The need for a major increase in hospital space and services has long been established, according to Medicus Planning statistics and projections. The area served by New Norwood Hospital includes a population of 250,000, expected to grow to 300,000 by 1980. The emergency room is reportedly one of the busiest suburban Boston hospitals.
Some patient beds are still in hospital corridors in July, although this is considered a healthier time of year. While expansion is planned in terms of services and not simply increased bed capacity, Administrator Buchmueller said the 277-bed hospital should enlarge to meet community needs.
