A new telephone exchange has officially been introduced in town, with New England Telephone assigning the 255 exchange to approximately 200 local customers, according to Roberta Clement, area supervisor for communities along Route 128.
Fourth Telephone Exchange Established in Town
The 255 prefix joins 551, 762, and 769 as the fourth telephone exchange operating in Norwood. Clement noted that operations have run fairly smoothly since the new numbers went into effect about two months prior.
Because the exchange serves a small subscriber base, most town residents remained unaware of the addition. “The chances of coming across that exchange is really remote, we’re talking maybe once a week at the most,” Clement stated. The only reported technical issues stemmed from customers utilizing large corporate switchboards who experienced connection difficulties because they had not yet programmed the new exchange prefix into their internal telephone systems.
