
Bill Schindler the nations top-ranking midget auto racing driver and winner of 53 feature races last year, visited Norwood’s new half-million-dollar oval now under construction off Route 1, Norwood, last Friday and pronounced it “one of the finest in the country.
Schindler lost a leg in 1936 during a race on Long Island but despite his handicap has become the number-one midget track driver in the country Last year by winning 53 feature races he set a new record His home is in Freeport L. I
Since he will see action at the Norwood Arena- this season he was anxious to gain first-hand knowledge of the new strip which is scheduled to open this Spring.
The veteran driver spent several hours in Norwood in company with other high-ranking members of the midget auto fraternity.
Schindler was highly enthusiastic about the new track layout and was most favorably impressed with its safety features for both drivers and spectators.
“It’s going to be a beautiful track—fast and safe.’ said Schindler, “and I know that I’m going to enjoy racing here this season.”
Accompanying him on his Norwood visit and also lavish in their praise of the new track were John Whitehouse, president of the Bay State Racing Association and Roland Turgeon, president of the American Midget Track Owners Association.
