In the co-feature, Norwood, league runnerup to Walpole, defeted Newton, 2-1, on a goal by Blaine Maus in sudden death overtime.

The Norwood-Newton affair was a cliffhanger all the way although the Bay State entry enjoyed a shooting advantage. Richie Hebner, the 190-pound, 6-foot right wing, scored the game’s first goal at 3:58 of the third period.

Hebner took a pass from Maus and drilled home a 30-foot backhander. Key man on this goal was left winger Paul Angelo who managed to screen Newton goalie Kevin McLatchy perfectly. Dick Tcomey, the G.B.I. League’s high scorer, tied it at 6:16 when he scored unassisted. Toomey caught the far corner with a 20-footer from the left side.

Angelo also figured in the winning goal. It was he who fed Maus, who sank a high shot from 10 feet out. Newton was short a man at the time and the goal came just moments after a faceoff to the right of the Newton cage.

McLatchy played a strong game and stopped 19 Norwood bids. Norwood goalie Tom Smeltsor received tremendous protection, and had to make only eight saves.
