Inaugural Season of the Lou Gehrig Baseball League
On July 11, 1973, the newly formed Lou Gehrig League prepared to launch its inaugural teenage baseball season.

The debut was scheduled for a Thursday night under the lights at American Legion Stadium in Norwood, featuring two teams of 13 and 14-year-old local boys. Named in honor of baseball legend Lou Gehrig, the league was established to provide a structured summer playing opportunity for teenagers from eight different communities: Norwood, Hyde Park, Mansfield, North Attleboro, Norton, Sharon, Stoughton, and West Roxbury.

The organizational roots of the league trace back to the previous year, when Robert MacEachern of Norwood advocated for the creation of a new summer option for local youth. While the established Babe Ruth League provides a season from May through early July, it does not separate players into distinct age brackets for 13-14 and 15-16-year-olds. Hank Klosowski, the league’s equipment manager, emphasized that separating these age groups fosters fairer competition. Because of initial funding limitations, the league was only able to recruit 75 players from the Babe Ruth League pool, despite much higher levels of interest. To date, over $4,000 has been invested in the operation, with significant funds raised during a “Las Vegas Night” at the Norwood Armory last month. Plans for future fundraisers are already underway, as league organizers like Klosowski envision the initiative eventually expanding into a national organization with its own dedicated stadium for playoffs.
