On July 9, 1972, the Norwood American Legion baseball team showcased a dominant performance in Zone 6A play, securing a 2-0 victory over Needham. The triumph was fueled by an exceptional pitching performance from Mark Linehan and clutch hitting from Chris Dixon, moving Norwood’s season record to 8-4.

The contest was defined by a rapid pitcher’s duel between Linehan and Needham’s Jack Recco. Both pitchers maintained excellent control, allowing the game to move along swiftly through the early innings. Norwood broke the scoreless tie in the third inning when Chris Dixon launched a towering home run to left field. Although the ball traveled an estimated 400 feet, Dixon had to hustle to slide home safely, as the Needham outfielders were caught off guard by the power of the blast.

Linehan remained untouchable throughout the afternoon, throwing an eight-hit shutout and recording ten strikeouts to earn his fourth win of the season against only one loss. Needham’s defense provided some highlight-reel moments, particularly in the fourth inning when Scheufele made an over-the-shoulder grab to rob Kevin Greeley of an extra-base hit. Needham also successfully thwarted a scoring threat in the eighth inning when they threw out Dixon at the plate.

Norwood added an insurance run in the sixth inning to secure the final 2-0 margin. The rally began with an infield hit by Joe Porcello, followed by a successful sacrifice bunt from Dixon. Bill Denehy then drove home the runner with a well-placed single. With the win, Norwood maintained its second-place position in the zone standings, while the defending zone champions from Needham fell to 5-5. The victory demonstrated Norwood’s ability to execute in low-scoring, high-pressure games, cementing their status as a top contender in the league.
